Ok, so now you have buckets and buckets of candy! The children are overjoyed, and you are a little concerned...what are you going to do with it all? How are you going to get your children on-board with a few alternatives....something other than stuffing it all in their mouth and getting a giant tummy ache! Here a dozen suggestions!!!
- Have you ever heard of the Switch Witch? There are a couple of different ones, all very cute! You can purchase a doll and the book here. This is such a neat idea for smaller children. The idea is that they exchange their candy into the Switch Witch and in return she leaves them a small prize! If you wanted to implement this tradition I don't even think you need the doll...you can just tell them the story and have them leave their candy in an agreed upon place for the exchange.
- Operation Gratitude. This is a wonderful organization that ships care packages to those who serve, have served, and their families. They will accept candy shipped to this address: Operation Gratitude
21100 Lassen Street
Chatsworth, CA 91311
Attn: Angel Cuevas/Receiving (818)469-0448 - Operation Stars and Stripes. This is another awesome care package organization supporting those who give us our freedom! They accept candy donations for their care packages to the this address: Rosalyn-Sue Smith, President
Operation Stars & Stripes, Inc.
483 Old Canton Road, Suite 100
Marietta, GA 30068 - Operation Shoebox. This is a fabulous organization, and a wonderful way to get your children in the mode of doing service for others! You can "go all out" and pack gallon size bags of gifts, candy, and presents and mail to Operation Shoebox. They will then mail these out to the troops. But, if you just want to ship your candy to them you can do that! Here is the address to ship your candy to.
Operation Shoebox
8360 East Highway 25
Belleview. Fl. 34420 - Do you regularly get asked to participate in various bake sales? Well, you can put that candy to great use! There are many recipes online for using your candy for baking treats. This recipe looks awesome, and it is even called Witch's Brew Brownies! These would be a bake sale hit all year long! And children love helping you bake even more than eating candy! That is a down and dirty, getting messy fact!
- One fun idea would be to use it all to decorate a gingerbread house! You could have any theme for your creation! Now days gingerbread houses are created post-Halloween with a Halloween theme, or you could do one for Thanksgiving, or Christmas! I highly recommend a basic kit to get you started...like this one, at least for the foundation. Unless you are way better than me in the kitchen....I know better than to attempt to bake an original gingerbread house! Especially if no one is really going to eat it anyway!!
- Use your candy for science! Here is a neat blog to get your creative science juices flowing! And....Here is another one!
- Advent calendars are a fantastic way to moderate candy intake! You could have them pick out their favorite candies and place one a day into an advent calendar! Here is a neat one I found, but you could always make your own! You could start with a plain drawer system, and make it for any month, or a countdown to any big event!
- Candy can actually last a long time if you store it in the freezer. Sometimes a straightforward and logical approach works very well. You may want to consider just explaining to your children before they go out that they will be allowed to select 5-10 pieces to enjoy over the next few days, and that the rest of the candy will be placed in the freezer to keep for future needs. Sometimes having a little reward candy for that occasional straight "A" report card, test, or book report comes in quite handy!
- You can consider having your children use their candy for math practice. You can do all types of sorting, adding, multiplying, graphing and such using candy! Check out all these munchable math activities on Pinterest.
- Ronald McDonald House. What a sweet way to use your candy! They can always use snacks and non-perishable items.
- Enter our candy contest! More details will be e-mailed out to our sweet sweet patients! Dr. Aric and I are looking for the most creative "sculpture" made of Halloween candy to be brought into our office before November 10th. Calling all future engineers, artists, designers, sculptors, and architects! No age limit, parents are free to help. I mean hot glue may be a necessity, and I don't need any burnt fingers on my conscious. This is a contest for our patients only, winner will get a $100 gift card for Amazon!!!
I hope everyone has a magical Halloween! Remember moderation is the key. Enjoy the evening, enjoy a few candies, brush your teeth, and have a plan for the rest!
